Rail party in Haparanda and Tornio

On Monday, January 27, there will be a party to celebrate the electrified rail link from Laurila to Tornio and Haparanda. The connection opens up for smoother travel, stronger connections and sustainable development across borders.

The party starts in Tornio at the Tornedalens Museum and continues at Haparanda railway station. Participants will enjoy exhibitions, speeches, music, films, refreshments and fireworks.

Before the trains start running, political decisions need to be made in both Sweden and Finland. Of course, the transport companies also need to synchronize timetables for both freight and passenger trains. The hope is that the first trains will cross the border in 2025.

“From a tourism perspective, the new rail link opens up for smoother travel routes for travelers who want to experience both Finnish Lapland and Norrbotten”, says Annika Fredriksson, CEO, Swedish Lapland Visitors Board.

Haparanda municipality is pleased that everything is finally in place.

“It’s been a long process, so it’s great that it’s finally happening. Haparanda will now become an important hub with the railway crossing to Finland that we need to utilize and take care of. This means a great potential for us”, says Janne Lind (C), Haparanda’s municipal councilor, to NSD.
